FALLING ACORNS, MIGHTY OAKS

Charging Batteries

Today has been a day of charging batteries–both my metaphorical battery and batteries of electronics around my house.

I’ve had plenty of time to rest and relax this weekend. Yesterday I got up and went to the job fair at Bassett High School to set up the running slideshow. I ended up hanging out for the job fair, so that was my morning. I went home and ate the lunch that I grabbed while I was out. I don’t ever take naps, but somehow I managed to fall asleep for a good while with Netflix playing in the background.

This morning I get up and found my way to Aldi. It surprises me when I shop at the Aldi here in Martinsville. I always expect more people than there are. I’m glad that I don’t have to fight through a busy store, but it just surprises me that there aren’t more folks there to see Aldi’s latest deals.

After I finished there and had my lunch, I started in on the mix of chores and lesson planning that I rotate through on Sundays. I’ve got laundry in the wash and still have a sink full of dishes, (with a drain tray full of clean ones), but I’ve gotten a lot done today so I’m just going to roll with it. This week will be busy though as I am leaving Friday for Bristol’s birthday. I need to make sure the guinea pig is squared away and I leave the house reasonably clean so when I return next Sunday I won’t return to a hot mess.

While I have been working, I have been recharging my own batteries. I love my job but there are sometimes where I just feel worn out. There’s always so much going on and the to do list never ends. We had a snow day last week, but it still seemed like the week was a whirlwind.

With all of my own recharging going on, it seems like every electronic device I have needed to be recharged. I wish I could tell you that everything is at 100% battery life, but I won’t lie to you. I need to get better about topping things off, but it is hard to do. I have eight devices near me right now (including this computer) that all have to be charged occasionally. That’s not counting the other devices in the next room. I’ve got my camera battery on the charge (and I probably need to charge the back up battery too).

I have neglected the camera a lot lately it seems. I just haven’t had anything to take a picture of, but I’m hoping that changes soon. I’m going to take it to school with me a couple of days this week to see if I can get any good shots. I miss the creative piece of it. I need to find someone to do some portraits with just to get back into the swing of things. I don’t want to get in a rut without an outlet again.

I have been working a lot on some of my library social media this week. I have curated a Wakelet, which can be found here. A lot of the information is specific to my school and my library, but there are some things that could easily be used for other schools. I’m very impressed with the format of the Wakelet site. When I get to school early tomorrow, I’m going to bookmark it on all of the school computers. I think this will make it easier for kids to use some of the things that we have since all of the links are compiled in one easy to locate place.

I’ve also been pretty active on my Twitter. It’s been nice to connect with people who understand my world. Being in the library sometimes feels like I’m in my own little island, which I love in a way because I have so much freedom. In another way, it presents challenges since I don’t have the connections with other staff and teachers that I might would like–simply because we don’t see each other. That was one of the things that I enjoyed about the job fair yesterday. I have never spent that much time talking to any of the teachers at my school. I mean, yeah, we were kinda forced into conversation since otherwise we’d just be standing there awkwardly waiting for the next person to visit our table… but regardless, it felt nice.

I recharged Wiggly’s batteries today too. Clean cage, fresh hair, scrubbed down water bottles, and an overflowing bowl of food is enough to make any guinea pig happy.
