FALLING ACORNS, MIGHTY OAKS

Resource Roundup–Gimkit

When I attended the VSTE conference back in December, one of the many takeaways that I got from my sessions were new apps and websites. One of them, by far, is Gimkit.

Another cool thing about Gimkit–it was created by a high school student!

Gimkit reminds me of Kahoot or Quizlet Live. Students work at their own pace, answering questions on their individual devices. They are able to earn “money” in the game, which they can use to buy power-ups. These power-ups allow players to earn more per question, freeze their opponents, and more.

This new way of gamifying learning has been super cool. When I got back from VSTE, I wanted to test this out on my students. I have had several kids beg me to do it again… and it’s been a couple of months since we did that in class. As a librarian, I sometimes have to be selective about what we are doing in class so that I can cover all that I want to cover. However, I need to find a way to slip it into one of my lessons soon.

The part that I like the best about it is that students are working at their own pace, answering the questions. They are very engaged as they watch themselves climb up the leaderboard and they are working hard to earn money in the game so that they can get these upgrades.

If you are a Quizlet user, you can import your flashcards into Gimkit. This would be a great way to review vocabulary.

You can find Gimkit on Twitter.
