FALLING ACORNS, MIGHTY OAKS

Teach With Me: School Librarian at Home Edition

Friday, March 13th was our last day at school. Since then, I have gotten a lot done but at the same time I feel as if there is a daunting amount of tasks ahead of me. The first couple of weeks were just shell shocked as we awaited marching orders for what was going to be expected of us next. I’ve had meetings, spoken with parents, and done a lot of curriculum curation (aka collecting all the resources I find) and I have been working on getting things straight in my library.

I am incredibly fortunate that I have been able to work in my building during all this. I have also had the help of my paraprofessional, as well as some of the other paraprofessionals in the building. A lot of the work I did last week was very physical (moving books around as part of my big relabeling and reorganization project), so the extra hands on deck were so, so important.

Most of my work that I have done at home has been done from my parents’ house. I have spent most of my time at home at Ashley’s house. Helping her with the kids, working on school stuff together, etc. The “Easter Bunny” brought me a new laminator, so I have one of those. My old one had a gear grinding in it and was pulling in about every third sheet crooked.

I have ordered myself a new printer with HP Instant Ink capabilities, so I’m planning on blowing up that subscription during the quarantine. I’m also going to work on printing off some stuff for Bristol to work on. I need a good schedule for the lockdown and for the summer, so we are starting to get into that routine… I hope. I need my “work time”, workout time, fun time, cooking/food time (aka not eating all day)… my days of unstructured time are starting to run all together and I just feel like I need a schedule of some sorts.

I have several work from home projects that I want to tackle during the shutdown and during summer. I am going to make a bunch of adaptive books for my special education students (could also be good for preschool). The printer, laminator, and book binding machine that I purchased will be a great help for this.

When I receive my new stuff, I will write a review of the items because I think these could be a great teacher investment. I’m looking forward to really cranking out all of the “good stuff”. I’m also going to share the books that I am working on creating for the students. Everything has been purchased from Teachers Pay Teachers, so there will be lots of good stuff to share.

Short version from this Sunday night–I’m trying to get myself together to be the best librarian that I can be. Even though I’m not having a ton of interaction with kids at the moment, I’m doing lots to help make the library better for them (physical space/organization wise) and I’m working on lots of things that we can use with my special education kids, which is one of my more challenging groups that I work with.
